Why the weight matters more than the size

The landfill charges by the ton, not the yard. Here's what's heavy, what isn't, and how to stay inside the included weight.

A pile of concrete next to a pile of cardboard

Every dumpster rental includes a set amount of weight. A 20 yard comes with two tons. Household junk and remodel debris almost never get there. Dirt, concrete and roofing get there fast.

Here's the rough math. A yard of broken concrete weighs about a ton and a half. A yard of wet dirt, about a ton. A square of asphalt shingles, about 250 pounds, so a 25-square roof is three tons. A yard of cardboard and foam weighs almost nothing.

The landfill weighs our truck in and out. If your load is over the included tons, the ticket shows it and we charge for the difference. The ticket goes on your invoice. We'd rather you never see a weight charge, which is why we ask what you're loading before delivery.

Two rules keep you inside the limit. Heavy material goes in a 10 yard, and only a 10 yard. And roofing goes in the size we suggest, not the one that looks big enough.

If you're not sure how heavy your pile is, call. A minute on the phone beats a surprise on the invoice.
